The reality of elderly people living in the streets of Beni and Butembo, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, highlights a major social problem. These towns, like other regions of the country, do not have suitable reception structures for elderly people. This situation forces many seniors to beg to meet their most basic needs, such as food and clothing.
It is alarming to note that these elderly people, often destitute and fragile, are faced with the harsh reality of the street. Some of them endure precarious living conditions, exposed to bad weather and sometimes victims of mistreatment. This marginalization of older people highlights a lack of consideration and support on the part of society towards those who contributed to its construction.
However, stories of solidarity and filial love shed light on this dark reality. We meet lucky elderly people like Florida Kavugho Pendeza, who enjoy the unconditional support of their families. Her daughter, Charlotte, devoted and attentive, watches over her mother with tenderness despite the challenges linked to her old age. A poignant testimony which reveals the importance of the family bond and the support of seniors in their daily lives.
In the context of this problem, local initiatives such as the Association of Elderly Solidarity Elders (ASSTA) play a crucial role in raising awareness among elderly people of the dangers of begging and in promoting actions in favor of their well-being. . These collective actions aim to offer moral and material support to seniors, while encouraging intergenerational dialogue and solidarity within the community.
It is essential that society becomes aware of the importance of protecting and respecting its elders, who deserve dignity and consideration. Fighting against the isolation and precariousness of elderly people, providing them with a safe and warm environment, is a moral and human duty. By caring for our elders, valuing their experience and their contribution to society, we are building a more just and caring world for all.
Together, let us commit to preserving the dignity and well-being of older people, to offering them the support and love they need to fully live their old age with serenity and respect. Because every person deserves to be heard, respected and loved, whatever their age or condition.
