Education as a driver of development in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Education is the fundamental pillar of any developing country, and Congo is no exception. The Ordinary General Assembly of the Synergy of Teachers’ Unions of the DRC which was held recently in Kinshasa highlighted the crucial issues facing teachers in this country. Despite the progress made by the government to improve the working conditions of teachers, the results for the 2023-2024 school year remain mixed.

Teachers, at the forefront of training future generations, expressed their concerns during this assembly. Among the main demands are the need for reform in terms of remuneration, both in the public and private sectors of national education. Education professionals insist on the importance of reviewing salary policy, not only to guarantee decent salaries for teachers, but also to ensure the sustainability and quality of education.

The call for discussions on salary policy launched by teachers is a strong signal sent to the government. They plead for fair and equitable remuneration, which recognizes the value of the work provided by teachers and which encourages their commitment to the education of the children of Congo. School infrastructure is also a key concern, as adequate buildings and modern equipment are essential to provide a conducive learning environment.

Beyond material considerations, teachers also demand recognition of their status and their role in Congolese society. They aspire to be valued for their essential contribution to the development of the country. This symbolic dimension of the teaching profession is essential for maintaining the motivation and commitment of teachers in their educational mission.

In conclusion, the issue of education in the DRC goes far beyond the simple framework of salaries and infrastructure. It is a societal issue that requires a global and coherent political vision. Investing in education means investing in the future of Congo, by offering every child the opportunity to grow, learn and contribute to the development of their country. Teachers are the key players in this collective enterprise, and it is essential to support and accompany them in their noble mission.
