Fatshimetrie, July 8, 2024 – The critical humanitarian situation of displaced populations in the North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, following clashes between the Congolese Armed Forces and the M23 supported by Rwanda, calls for urgent action. The fighting has forced thousands of people to flee their homes, leaving behind dire conditions and an uncertain future.
The national deputy for Goma, Patrick Munyomo Basilwango, recently called on the Congolese government to seize the opportunity of the humanitarian truce to ensure adequate humanitarian and health assistance to these vulnerable populations. He underlines the need to reunite families separated by conflicts, particularly orphaned children who find themselves alone in displaced persons camps. According to him, this charitable initiative could bring relief and hope to the most vulnerable among the displaced.
Alongside humanitarian support, the MP also called for strengthening the vigilance of defense and security forces to prevent any violation of the truce by terrorist groups. This measure aims to protect civilian populations and maintain stability in the region, by preventing M23/RDF fighters from disrupting the fragile balance established by the truce.
Patrick Munyomo’s appeal highlights the need for a rapid and coordinated humanitarian response to meet the immediate needs of the displaced and guarantee their safety. As the international community carefully observes the situation, it is imperative that concrete measures are taken to alleviate the suffering of populations affected by armed conflicts.
In these times of crisis, solidarity and compassion must guide our actions to offer a glimmer of hope to those who have lost everything. The Congolese government and the international community have a crucial role to play in guaranteeing the necessary protection and assistance to the displaced populations of North Kivu. The time for speeches is over, it is time to act to save lives and preserve human dignity in this conflict-torn region.
