The climate of terror in Bunia: a community in search of security and justice

The climate of terror and insecurity which reigns in Bunia, capital of the province of Ilturi, has plunged the population into a deep feeling of worry and anger. Indeed, Monday July 8 saw socio-economic activities slow down, following the brutal assassination of four individuals, including three members of the Yira community, in a gold buying counter.

This tragedy deeply shocked the local population, and many people expressed their solidarity by closing their businesses to pay tribute to the victims. The Yira community, deeply affected by this tragedy, declared two days of ghost town as a sign of protest and to demand effective measures from local authorities to ensure the safety of residents.

It is particularly shocking that members of the Yira community are regularly targeted by armed bandits in the region. This indiscriminate and recurring violence cannot go unpunished, and residents are demanding rapid and effective action from the authorities to put an end to these deadly attacks.

The president of the Yira community, Mufalme Muke, strongly criticized the inaction of the security services in the face of this wave of violence which is hitting his community. It is time for concrete measures to be taken to guarantee the safety of all residents of Bunia, regardless of their origin or community affiliation.

The situation became even worse with the tragic death of another civilian, killed by a soldier in unclear circumstances. These acts of violence are unacceptable and demonstrate the urgency of strengthening security and justice systems so that the perpetrators are brought to justice and the victims finally obtain justice.

It is essential that local authorities take immediate measures to restore security and confidence among the population of Bunia. The lives of residents cannot be permanently threatened by such barbaric acts of violence. It is time to act so that peace and security finally regain their place in this city ravaged by violence.
