Kenya in Solidarity with Haiti: A Crucial Partnership for Security and Peace

The deployment of Kenyan police forces to Haiti to deal with escalating gang violence is a significant development that sparks hope in a country plagued by insecurity. The arrival of these agents from East Africa was gratefully welcomed by Prime Minister Garry Conille during a press conference held recently.

The critical situation in Haiti, marked by acts of vandalism, arson and massive destruction, led the Prime Minister to express his gratitude to Kenya for its solidarity. He highlighted the devastating impact of gang activities, which have transformed parts of the country into almost unlivable areas.

Alongside Kenyan officers, Prime Minister Conille reaffirmed the Haitian government’s firm commitment to resolving these crucial issues. He responded to the call for negotiation issued by gang leader Jimmy Cherizier, known as Barbecue, by emphasizing the importance of disarmament and respect for state authority by gangs. The deployment of Kenyan police forces will begin soon, but details of their first mission remain confidential for now.

The presence of Monica Juma, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kenya and current national security advisor to President William Ruto, underlines her country’s commitment to supporting the Haitian National Police in the restoration of public order and security. Ties between the two nations are strengthened through this collaboration.

The arrival of these Kenyan police forces, the first foreign forces to be deployed in Haiti with the support of the UN, raises hope in a country where 80% of the capital is under the influence of violent gangs, affecting the lives of more than 580,000 people and leading to the deaths of thousands in recent years. This international gesture is seen as an important step towards the restoration of peace and order in a country seeking stability.

Kenya’s commitment alongside Haiti in this fight for security and peace is an example of international solidarity and concrete action in the face of a humanitarian crisis that has lasted too long. The future promises to be full of challenges, but hope grows with each step towards a better future for the Haitian people.
