The Minister of Information and National Guidance recently issued a statement regarding the detention of Gambaryan in Abuja. This announcement follows the visit of two members of the US Congress to the Kuje Correctional Center the day before.
Congress attendees reported that Gambaryan was in pain and was not receiving appropriate medical care. However, the minister strongly rejected the allegations, saying they were false and should be ignored.
He said Gambaryan’s detention was lawful and that he was receiving quality medical care if needed. Additionally, he had full access to the consular services of his home government.
The Federal Government would not take any action that jeopardizes his fundamental rights to a fair trial and quality care, including health care, even if tried under the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The minister stressed that Gambaryan’s detention was court-ordered and only the courts could change the terms of his detention or order his release.
He further asserted that the federal government would continue to follow legal procedures to hold Gambaryan accountable for his actions.
This compliance with legal and diplomatic standards underscores Nigeria’s commitment to upholding justice and ensuring the integrity of its judicial processes.
