Commemoration of MKO Abiola: Upholding Democracy and Justice in Nigeria

It is paramount to highlight the importance of commemorating historic events such as the “2024 Memorial Program for the Commemoration of June 12, 1993 Election” held in Lagos. This event, organized by the Committee for the Defense of Human Rights (CDHR) in collaboration with the Center for Anti-Corruption and Open Leadership (CACOL) as well as the Moshood Abiola Mandate Movement, was the opportunity for many speakers to recall the legacy of democracy and justice embodied by the late MKO Abiola.

MKO Abiola, an emblematic figure in the struggle for democracy in Nigeria, sacrificed his life for noble ideals such as the fight against poverty and hunger, and the promotion of true democracy in Africa. His failed victory in the 1993 presidential election remains a symbol of courage and determination for many Nigerians. Recognizing Abiola as a former President and establishing June 12 as MKO Abiola Day would be a strong symbolic gesture and would help heal the wounds of a tumultuous past.

The speakers highlighted the philanthropic and visionary character of MKO Abiola, recalling that his generosity and determination made him a symbol of trust for an entire continent. His commitment to social justice and his fight against inequalities left their mark and still arouses admiration.

It is crucial to remember that democracy is not limited to symbols and commemorations, but must be embodied in the concrete actions of leaders. Workers must be fairly paid, human rights must be respected and elections must be free and fair. Current leaders are called upon to draw inspiration from the ideals of democracy and justice held by figures such as MKO Abiola.

Finally, it is important to welcome initiatives aimed at honoring the memory of forgotten history and recalling past struggles for freedom and justice. June 12 remains a pivotal date in the history of Nigeria and Africa, and it is our duty to continue this legacy for future generations.
