Towards a possible diplomatic breakthrough in the Gaza conflict

In a climate marked by the announcement of a possible ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs reaffirmed his country’s full support for this initiative. This decision comes following a detailed proposal by US President Joe Biden, putting forward a three-phase plan from Israel for Hamas militants. According to Biden, this plan could lead to the release of the remaining hostages in Gaza and potentially put an end to this war which has raged for almost eight months.

Minister Albares clearly expressed the desire to see the hostages held by Hamas released immediately, and to guarantee the opening of supply lines for the population of Gaza. He stressed the need to work towards lasting peace for all people in the Middle East.

For his part, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry recalled that the Israeli military presence in the Gaza Strip was not desired by his country nor by the majority of the international community. He affirmed Egypt’s categorical position rejecting any Israeli presence at the Rafah crossing, stressing that this crossing point was the Palestinians’ only link with the rest of the world.

Separately, Albares extended warm congratulations to Claudia Sheinbaum, who will become the first woman to lead Mexico in more than two centuries of national independence.

These events highlight the importance of diplomatic initiatives and international actions to achieve peaceful resolution of conflicts and promote gender equality in spheres of power. Hopefully, these announcements mark the beginning of an era of stability and cooperation for the entire Middle East region.
