At the heart of M23 violence: the urgency of lasting peace in North Kivu

In the heart of North Kivu, the region from Lutobogo to Sake was the scene of a new episode of violence involving the M23 rebels. On Friday, May 31, four innocent civilians were victims of bombs dropped by rebels, sparking a wave of indignation and fear among the local population. These brutal attacks testify to the persistence of armed conflicts in the region, clashes which pitted the Congolese armed forces against these rebel groups.

Local authorities report an extremely volatile situation in the Sake region, endangering the lives of residents and seriously disrupting the stability of the region. The clashes of Thursday, May 30 highlighted the resilience of the FARDC in the face of attacks by the M23 rebels, demonstrating their determination to protect the population and restore peace in the region.

Lieutenant-Colonel Guillaume Ndjike, spokesperson for the FARDC in North Kivu, highlighted the efforts made by the army to contain and counter the movements of the M23 rebels in Sake. Military operations carried out by the FARDC and their allies made it possible to foil several attacks and neutralize a considerable number of rebel fighters.

Despite these successes, the threat persists in the region, particularly in the Kanyabayonga groupement, where rebels continue to sow terror through their violent actions. The situation remains tense, particularly in the north of the Bwito chiefdom, where the rebels managed to take control of the village of Bulundi, a few kilometers from the rural commune of Kanyabayonga.

The international community must remain mobilized in the face of this critical situation and support the efforts of the Congolese authorities to restore peace and security in the North Kivu region. It is imperative to protect innocent civilians from violence perpetrated by armed groups and to guarantee a peaceful future for the inhabitants of this conflict-ridden region.

In conclusion, the security situation remains worrying in North Kivu, and it is urgent to strengthen cooperation between the different parties involved to put an end to the violence and establish a climate of lasting peace in the region. The victims of attacks must be supported and protected, and those responsible for the abuses must be brought to justice to answer for their crimes.
