Fatshimetrie provides an overview of ongoing clashes between the Congolese army and M23 rebels in Rutshuru and Masisi territories. Fighting has intensified in recent days, particularly around the Rwindi region, with reports of several villages being recaptured by Congolese armed forces.
In the territory of Masisi, Congolese army troops, supported by their allies, are leading an offensive against the M23 rebels. The clashes were particularly concentrated on the Bweremana-Karuba axis in the south of the territory, as well as around Bihambwe. The Congolese armed forces reportedly managed to regain control of at least eight villages after conquering the strategic hill of Ndumba, which dominates the town of Bweremana.
The reconquest of Bihambwe and other surrounding villages was also mentioned, confirming the army’s determination to regain control of the region and secure the mining town of Rubaya. However, the detonations of artillery and mortars reported in Rutshuru around the Rwindi suggest a still tense situation in the region.
Separately, aerial attacks by M23 rebels were reported, hitting civilian areas such as a school in Rudahuba in Minova. Fortunately, these attacks did not cause any casualties, but they highlight the need to protect civilians from the violence linked to this armed conflict.
Recent events demonstrate an escalation of tensions in the Rutshuru and Masisi region, highlighting the persistent security challenges in this part of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is essential to find lasting solutions to end these conflicts and guarantee security and stability for all communities affected by this violence.
