Challenges and issues of the new National Assembly in the DRC

In the political landscape of the Democratic Republic of Congo, the recent elections and the installation of the final office of the National Assembly have sparked a wave of mixed reactions. While some express cautious optimism about the emergence of a political renewal, others, such as the president of ASADHO, Jean-Claude Katende, display skepticism about the possible progress that this new leadership team could bring. of the lower house of parliament.

Jean-Claude Katende, known for his outspokenness and his commitment to human rights, highlighted the lack of commitment of the new office of the National Assembly in matters of parliamentary control. According to him, since the advent of Félix Tshisekedi to the presidency, this control has never been exercised in a significant way. He particularly criticizes the complacency observed under the former legislature, led by Christophe Mboso, towards the government in place.

For Jean-Claude Katende, it is imperative that citizens become more involved in citizen control at all levels so that the government responds effectively to the needs of the population. He believes that the National Assembly does not seem to be the appropriate relay to ensure impartial and effective control of government actions.

The new office of the National Assembly, with Vital Kamerhe at its head and former president Christophe Mboso as second vice-president, is thus faced with a major challenge: to restore confidence in the Congolese people in their ability to exercise critical control over executive power. While expectations are high, it is now crucial for these leaders to demonstrate their willingness and ability to act transparently and responsibly.

In a complex political context marked by multiple challenges, citizen vigilance and pressure from civil society appear to be essential levers to guarantee the democratic and equitable functioning of institutions. The path to more just and transparent governance undoubtedly involves strengthening parliamentary control and active participation of citizens in the political life of the country.
