Injustice and tragedy in Fatika: a family’s fight for justice and dignity

In a peaceful village of Fatika in Nigeria, a family mourns the loss of twelve of their members, accusing soldiers of acting unjustifiably. In a petition addressed to military and security authorities, the family calls for the withdrawal of soldiers deployed there, the return of their livestock and an end to the sale of their agricultural land.

According to family members, their nightmare began in December 2022, when soldiers killed 10 people for no good reason. These tragic acts were allegedly carried out by a sergeant named Usman, nicknamed Bagobiri because of his distinctive tribal markings. Bereaved families were deprived of their livestock and land during successive attacks carried out by this sergeant and his accomplices.

The situation reached a crisis point when Sergeant Usman, assisted by members of the local militia, seized hundreds of head of cattle belonging to the family. These animals were sold and transported to an unknown destination, leaving the family in deep financial and emotional distress. Despite attempts at reconciliation and the steps taken by the family to recover part of their livestock, the losses remain significant.

The family members now find themselves in a tragic situation, deprived of their means of subsistence and threatened with eviction from their ancestral lands. Their main call is for justice and the protection of their fundamental rights. They demand not only the return of their livestock and land, but also financial compensation for the suffering they endured.

This affair sheds harsh light on the abuses of power and abuses committed by certain members of the security forces. The violence and injustice suffered by this family highlights the critical importance of ensuring respect for basic human rights, even in the most remote parts of the country.

It is imperative that the relevant authorities take immediate steps to resolve this conflict, provide justice to the affected family and ensure that such events do not occur again in the future. The families of Fatika deserve to live in peace on their lands and prosper, without fear of abuse of power and violations of their rights.

This poignant story reminds us of the importance of remaining vigilant and always standing up for justice and fairness, even in the face of the greatest adversity. We must stand united and act together to protect the most vulnerable and defend the rights of everyone, in all circumstances.
