Inauguration of the Funtua IDP project in Katsina: A major turning point for trade in Nigeria

The much-awaited inauguration of the Funtua IDP project site in Katsina is set to be a major event that will bring together key players and dignitaries from the industry. Rebecca Adamu, Deputy Director, Public Relations Unit of the Nigeria Shippers Council (NSC), highlighted the importance of this step as part of the NSC’s commitments to facilitate trade in the country.

This seaport is being erected as one of the flagship projects to highlight the NSC’s commitment to facilitating trade in the country. Establishing an inland dry port will bring shipping and port services closer to importers and exporters in the hinterland. This initiative will help decongest seaports, create employment opportunities, improve government revenues and many other benefits.

The inauguration of this project will also contribute to the realization of the commitment made by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola. Indeed, the completion of the Funtua Inland Dry Port Project before the end of the first quarter of 2024 fits perfectly into the NSC’s key performance indicators.

It is noteworthy that in February 2023, former President Muhammadu Buhari designated the Funtua IDP as a port of origin and destination, thereby providing importers and exporters with the opportunity to officially route their cargoes from Funtua to n’ any place in the world.

This inauguration is of capital importance not only for the logistics sector, but also for the national economy, by strengthening trade and facilitating import-export operations. The Funtua IDP Project Site is a promising step in the development of Nigeria’s logistics infrastructure and will strengthen its position as a regional trade hub.

By bringing together key players in the sector, this inauguration marks the start of a new era for maritime transport and will help make Nigeria a major player on the international scene in terms of trade and logistics.
