In the heart of the Kwilu province, a sad reality is emerging and raising awareness: the worrying increase in early births among adolescent girls. Over the months of the first quarter of 2024, no less than 226 young girls were confronted with this harsh ordeal, a cruel consequence of unwanted pregnancies, often the result of sexual violence.
The figures revealed by Dr Tyty Ntoti, provincial coordinator of the national adolescent and youth health program, are alarming. The 226 deliveries that occurred represent nearly 14% of the cases recorded in the province of Kwilu, a sign of a scourge that continues to intensify. Faced with this dramatic reality, collective awareness is required, urgent action is necessary to raise awareness, educate and protect vulnerable young girls.
It is in this overwhelming context that an important awareness campaign was held orchestrated by the non-profit community of friends of nature and culture (CANACU), in partnership with the national health program for adolescents and young people. The objective was clear: to inform, educate and prevent sexual violence among adolescents, young people and students. Dr Ntoti stressed the importance of these awareness sessions in combating a deep-rooted evil in society.
This initiative benefited from the support of committed personalities, such as the Provincial Minister of Gender, Family and Children, as well as the Deputy Provéd of EPST Bandundu 1, reaffirming the urgency of collective mobilization to protect youth and defend their fundamental rights. These field workers were able to demonstrate empathy and determination to support young victims, encourage them to break the silence and denounce the violence of which they are victims.
By capturing the public’s attention on this painful but essential reality, these awareness-raising actions help to open dialogue, break taboos and promote a culture of respect and non-violence. It is essential that society as a whole mobilizes to protect the rights of adolescent girls, to support them in their journey and to prevent any form of abuse or sexual exploitation.
Thus, faced with this alarming observation of early births among adolescents in the Kwilu province, collective awareness is necessary. It is our duty as a society to do everything possible to protect our youth, to provide them with a safe, respectful and fulfilling environment. The future of these young girls is in our hands, and it is time to act to guarantee their well-being and development.
