Home International Deadly clashes around the city of Saké: the urgency of concerted action

Violent clashes shake the region around the city of Saké, in the province of North Kivu, on this day of May 8, 2024. Once again, the coalition formed by the groups M23, RDF and AFC is trying to take control of the town of Saké, plunging the population into uncertainty and fear.

Information relayed by a member of the Masisi Territorial Council reveals that detonations were heard from 1 a.m. this Wednesday. The fighting takes place mainly around the villages of Vunano, Mwambaliro and Lutobogo, as well as on Kiuli hill, located near Saké. These clashes endanger the security and stability of the region, already weakened by years of recurring conflicts.

Military sources report that the M23 rebels attempted a maneuver to bypass the Congolese armed forces by heading towards Butimbika, but were repulsed. Currently, fighting is concentrated around Lutobogo and Vunano, as well as on the strategic hill of Kihuli, all located near Saké, a sign of escalating violence and instability in the region.

These clashes rekindle tensions and remind us of the need for concerted action to guarantee the security of civilian populations and prevent further violence. The international community and the Congolese authorities must redouble their efforts to sustainably resolve the root causes of the conflicts tearing apart the North Kivu region and threatening peace and security in the Great Lakes region.

It is essential to implement inclusive political and social solutions, promoting dialogue and reconciliation, to put a definitive end to violence and allow populations to live in peace and dignity. The current situation calls for collective mobilization and international solidarity to preserve regional stability and build a more secure future for the inhabitants of Saké and the entire North Kivu region.
