The challenges of government composition in the Democratic Republic of Congo

Home Politics The challenges of government composition in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The persistent wait for the composition of the first government of Félix Tshisekedi’s second five-year term raises questions and concerns among the Congolese population. Since the appointment of Judith Suminwa Tuluka as Prime Minister on April 1, 2024, 36 days have passed without the government team being put in place.

The reasons for this delay seem to be linked to various complexities, such as the requirement of certain partners of the Sacred Union, discussions around the quota, the size of the government, the geopolitical balance and female representation. This situation raises concerns about the effectiveness and relevance of the team that will ultimately be formed.

Some political actors and members of civil society are calling for a tighter government, comprising fewer than 40 ministers, in order to avoid burdening public finances and guarantee greater efficiency. It is essential to learn lessons from the past and not repeat the mistakes of previous governance deemed ineffective due to its disproportionate size.

Meanwhile, the Congolese population continues to face daily challenges such as the high cost of living, the deplorable state of urban roads, the lack of infrastructure and persistent insecurity. This delay in the establishment of the government also hinders the management of public affairs and directly impacts the lives of citizens, particularly in terms of payment of salaries of state civil servants which shows recurring delays.

It is urgent that political actors mobilize to form a functional government capable of meeting the real needs of the Congolese population, particularly in terms of security, purchasing power and infrastructure development. Expectations are high, and it is imperative that the future government team is composed of people of integrity, competence, experience and committed to the national interest.

Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka is called upon to take on immense challenges, particularly in terms of security in the east of the country, economic and social development, and the fight against corruption. His leadership and his ability to form a solid and efficient team will be crucial to meet the expectations of the population and to breathe new life into Congo.

In conclusion, the establishment of the government should not be further delayed, because the urgency of the problems to be resolved is real. It is time to put aside personal and partisan interests for the benefit of the general interest and the well-being of all Congolese citizens. Transparent, effective governance determined to serve the nation must be the top priority in the mission that awaits the future government team.
