In an ever-changing world where demand for electricity continues to increase, it is crucial for governments and businesses to provide a reliable supply of energy. However, several challenges stand in the way of this vital mission. A striking example of these obstacles is the current situation of Delta State in Nigeria, plagued by electricity supply problems that threaten the socio-economic and environmental well-being of its residents.
Coordinator of the group, Okezi Odugala, stressed at a press conference in Asaba that the current situation is devastating for the people of the state. Delta, as the country’s largest oil and gas producer, and home to one of the largest power generation plants in Ughelli, is not expected to face any power supply issues. It is unacceptable that our communities can only benefit from four hours of electricity per day, he said.
The situation is all the more worrying due to the heat wave caused by climate change, making living conditions unbearable for citizens. Odugala stressed the crucial importance of a constant power supply for the full realization of the “PLUS” agenda, which aims for Meaningful Development, Opportunities for all, realistic Reforms and strengthened peace and security. This constant supply of electricity will promote job creation, reduce crime and improve living conditions.
With the federal government’s recent reforms allowing state and local governments to generate and transmit electricity, Delta has an opportunity to expand its energy capacity through public-private partnerships. The group, however, expressed its distrust of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), calling on the government to break its monopoly in order to allow more efficient operators to intervene in the sector.
The coordinator urged Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to declare a state of emergency in the power sector and take proactive measures to make it a priority. He also called for review and reform of the energy sector to ensure constant power supply. Finally, he urged the governor to act quickly to leave a lasting mark in the state by making electricity a top priority.
The energy crisis in Delta highlights the critical importance of reliable power supply for the socio-economic development of the regions. By acting decisively to resolve electricity problems, authorities could pave the way for increased prosperity and better well-being for the entire population.
