On this day of March 14, 2024, the Goma Volcanological Observatory (OVG) maintains vigilance in the face of the activity of the Nyiragongo volcano, maintained at the yellow alert level. However, the data collected indicates more intense activity on the side of the neighboring volcano, Nyamulagira.

The threat is not only limited to Nyamulagira, but also extends to the Mazuku area, where high concentrations of CO2 can prove deadly to surrounding animal life. These toxic gas emissions come from cracks in the earth’s crust caused by seismic movements or eruptions. The OVG warns residents of the displaced persons camp near Mazuku, urging them to carefully follow the safety instructions issued by the observatory.

Despite these risks, the observatory continues its field observations through its monitoring networks of the Nyiragongo and Nyamulagira volcanoes, both part of the Virunga chain. The safety of the population remains a priority for the OVG, which remains attentive to any developments in the volcanic situation in the region.

This alert once again highlights the fragility of our environment in the face of the power of nature. It is crucial to remain vigilant and follow the recommendations of authorities in the event of an imminent volcanic threat.
