The responsibilities of African leaders in resolving regional conflicts

Recent statements by Congolese lawyer to the International Criminal Court (ICC), Evelyne Ombeni, raise a crucial question regarding the role of Congolese leaders in resolving the internal and external conflicts shaking the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). When French President Emmanuel Macron urged the Kigali regime to stop supporting the M23 rebel group and withdraw its troops from Congolese territory, Evelyne Ombeni expressed disappointment at the lack of demands in his remarks. According to her, the solution to these problems can only come from the Congolese leaders themselves, endowed with visionary and conscientious leadership.

These remarks highlight an essential aspect of international politics: the responsibility of national leaders in resolving crises affecting their countries. Indeed, although external pressures and interventions can play an important role, it is primarily up to local leaders to take the necessary measures to guarantee the security and stability of their nation.

President Félix Tshisekedi himself stressed the importance of the withdrawal of Rwandan troops from Congolese soil for any future discussions with Kigali. This firm stance reflects the Congolese government’s desire to protect the sovereignty of the DRC and put an end to foreign interference in its internal affairs.

The words of Evelyne Ombeni and President Tshisekedi call for deeper reflection on how African leaders can assume their responsibility in resolving regional conflicts that concern them. Rather than relying exclusively on external assistance, it is essential for these leaders to develop internal strategies and initiatives to promote peace and security in the region.

Ultimately, the situation in the DRC raises fundamental questions about the ability of African leaders to address the challenges facing their countries. While international pressure and public statements can help bring attention to these problems, it is ultimately up to national leaders to work together to find lasting and effective solutions.
