In an unprecedented movement aimed at unclogging the Makala central prison in Kinshasa, the First President of the Court of Cassation, Élie-Léon Ndomba, recently launched a call for the release of detainees without records. This initiative aims to address the injustices suffered by those who find themselves behind bars by accident, without a record or a fair trial.
During a meeting held recently at the prison, the first president declared: “All those detained without records will be released. It is essential to verify who has spent how long in prison and to put an end to detentions prolonged without a fair trial.
This decision follows a directive from the President of the Republic, Félix Tshisekedi, who ordered the Minister of State, in charge of Justice, to collaborate closely with the Superior Council of the Magistracy to put an end to arbitrary arrests, even for minor infractions, and guarantee compliance with file processing deadlines.
This measure aims to combat prison overcrowding in the Democratic Republic of Congo and to ensure respect for the fundamental rights of all citizens. It illustrates the government’s commitment to justice and equity for all.
This gesture is hailed as a positive step towards reform of the judicial system and improvement of detention conditions in Congolese prisons. It demonstrates the authorities’ desire to guarantee fair and equitable treatment for all citizens.
