Crucial elections to the National Assembly of the DRC: the UDPS nominates its candidate for vice-president

Home Politics Crucial elections to the National Assembly of the DRC: the UDPS nominates its candidate for vice-president

Crucial elections are currently taking place in the National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Congo, with the Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) naming its candidate for the first vice-president position. Jean-Claude Tshilumbayi has been selected by the presidential party to compete for this role in the final round of elections scheduled for May 8.

The nomination of Tshilumbayi follows the withdrawal of Augustin Kabuya, the previous contender for the vice-presidency. Kabuya stepped down to focus on safeguarding the regime and reinforcing the UDPS’s authority. This decision underscores a sense of unity within the party and an effort to solidify leadership internally.

Tshilumbayi’s candidacy as the potential first vice-president of the National Assembly was officially introduced to UDPS members during a meeting held on April 27. His selection appears to result from internal party discussions to nominate a representative capable of effectively advocating for the interests and principles of the UDPS within the assembly.

Meanwhile, Kabuya is vying for the senatorial elections to further enhance the UDPS’s representation in the nation’s political bodies. His victory seems promising, given the party’s majority in the Provincial Assembly of Kinshasa, yet nothing is certain in politics, and the outcome remains to be seen.

The choice of Jean-Claude Tshilumbayi and the strategy to bolster the party’s positions at various levels of authority reflect the UDPS’s ambition to strengthen its political foundation and maintain a prominent role in Congolese politics. The upcoming weeks hold significance for the party’s future and the country’s democratic institutions.
