President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) embarks on a significant tour of Europe, commencing in Berlin and proceeding to Paris for a two-day official visit. The primary focus of this tour is to address the concerning security situation in the eastern region of the DRC.
In his meeting with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, President Félix Tshisekedi will discuss the security crisis in the eastern region, particularly the conflict between government forces and the M23 rebel group, reportedly backed by Rwanda. This issue holds immense importance for the DRC, seeking clear support from European nations in response to this pressing situation.
Germany has previously expressed disapproval of Rwanda’s support for the M23 rebels. During a recent meeting between the German ambassador and the Congolese Minister of Defense, concerns were raised over the presence of Rwandan forces in the DRC, condemning the violation of the country’s sovereignty by foreign entities.
Apart from the security concerns, Germany is also deeply troubled by the humanitarian crisis in the region, where over a million people in Goma have been displaced due to the ongoing conflict. A delegation of Western ambassadors visited Goma to assess the humanitarian needs and raise awareness about the urgent situation.
