Controversy surrounding Cardinal Ambongo’s statements: investigation or freedom of expression?

The recent case involving Cardinal Fridolin Ambongo Besungu, Metropolitan Archbishop of Kinshasa, has stirred up significant controversy in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Prosecutor General at the Court of Cassation has directed the Court of Appeal of Matete/Kinshasa to launch an investigation into the Catholic prelate. He stands accused of deliberately manipulating consciences and fueling discord within the population.

The allegations against Cardinal Ambongo are grave, including making seditious remarks, inciting revolt against established institutions, and indirectly encouraging violence. The Prosecutor highlights that the Cardinal’s statements may demoralize armed forces engaged in the conflict in the country’s east and embolden rebel factions.

In a recent interview with Fides, Cardinal Ambongo’s comments on the government’s alleged support for armed groups in the east have heightened existing tensions. His assertions regarding the “Wazalendo” involvement in violence in Goma have sparked diverse reactions, deepening societal divisions.

It is vital to underscore the significant role of religious leaders in shaping society. While their influence extends beyond the ecclesiastical realm to impact political and social spheres, it must be wielded responsibly and within legal bounds. Calls for uprising and dissemination of false information can jeopardize national stability and citizen security.

Justice must now investigate to ascertain whether Cardinal Ambongo’s actions align with freedom of expression or pose a threat to public order. Regardless of the investigation’s outcome, it is imperative for all stakeholders – whether religious, political, or civil – to prioritize the nation’s best interests and uphold peace and social cohesion in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
