**Education in distress: The precarious schools of the Kigonze camp in Bunia, Ituri**

In the heart of the Mudzipela district in Bunia, Ituri, lies the Kigonze camp with over 6,000 displaced residents, where close to 1,000 children are enrolled in the camp’s two schools. However, these educational institutions, vital for the children’s development, are facing numerous challenges that severely impact the quality of education they offer.

One such school, Blessed Annuality, epitomizes the harsh reality. The classrooms are in disrepair, leaving students exposed to harsh weather conditions and hindering their learning experience. Unprotected windows let in rain, wind, and sunlight, disrupting classes and posing health risks to the children.

Despite the adversities, teachers at the school show remarkable dedication by teaching voluntarily to ensure these displaced children receive an education. Unfortunately, due to a lack of resources, the students are severely lacking in essential school supplies like uniforms, notebooks, and pens. This scarcity seriously impedes their access to a quality education.

Speaking on behalf of these children, Odette Kumu, a student at Bienheureuse Annualité school, calls on authorities to restore peace and facilitate their return to their original environment. It is crucial for governments and institutions to take tangible actions to ensure equitable access to education for all children regardless of their circumstances.

The repercussions of these challenges extend to the teachers, who are facing five months of unpaid salaries and bonuses. This financial instability leads to growing demotivation among the teaching staff, further compromising the quality of education provided.

Urgent measures are required from the competent authorities to support the fragile schools in the Kigonze camp in Bunia. Education stands as a fundamental pillar in the development of children and society at large. Investing in quality education for all children, irrespective of their situation, is not just a moral obligation but also a promise of a brighter future for everyone.
