The Deadly Conflict over Mineral Resources in the Djugu Territory

Home International The Deadly Conflict over Mineral Resources in the Djugu Territory

The territory of Djugu in Ituri province is currently embroiled in a prolonged conflict instigated by local armed groups, particularly the Codeco militia. This militia, associated with the Lendu community, has established its stronghold in the Banyali-Kilo sector, where it exploits mineral mines to procure weapons and perpetrate violent attacks against civilians and the DRC armed forces.

The continuous presence of Codeco has resulted in mass displacements of residents who have sought refuge in safer areas, leaving behind deserted villages and once-thriving lands. Despite numerous warnings from local and political figures, the military has failed to effectively counter the militia and restore peace to the region.

The primary driver of the conflicts between Codeco and other rebel factions like Zaire in Djugu territory is the competition for control over valuable mineral resources, especially gold and other minerals. These confrontations often lead to casualties, as witnessed in recent clashes where young men lost their lives in pursuit of the same resources.

Urgent action is required from the authorities to quell the violence that is ravaging the region. The persistent insecurity not only endangers civilians but also impedes economic progress and destabilizes any efforts towards long-term peace and development.

Djugu’s abundant mining potential should ideally fuel prosperity and growth in Ituri province. However, as long as militias exploit resources to sustain their violent activities, the dreams of a flourishing region will remain elusive for its inhabitants.

It is imperative for the authorities to implement concrete measures, enhance security presence, and engage in dialogues with all stakeholders to seek lasting resolutions to these conflicts. The future of Djugu and its people hinges on the government’s ability to halt the cycle of violence, promote reconciliation, and rebuild a peaceful and prosperous society.
