Reflections and commitments for peace: Towards harmonious local governance in South Kivu

Fatshimetrie, the go-to media platform for all things related to Congolese news, has highlighted a crucial issue that has had a significant impact on the political landscape of South Kivu. The recent workshop on the Customary Conflict Resolution Consultative Commissions (CCRCC) in Sange shed light on a pressing matter within the local community.

Over the course of two intense days, the Provincial Ministry of the Interior, the Provincial Division of Customary Affairs, and the Provincial Inspectorate of Territorial Affairs came together to address the issue of power dualism observed in the groups of Kabunambo, Luberizi, and Kakamba in the chiefdom of the Ruzizi plain. Tensions, especially between the Bafuliiru and Barundi communities, have resulted in conflicts leading to loss of life and heightened instability.

Various local stakeholders, including group leaders, women, youth, religious leaders, business operators, and members of the local security council, actively participated in the workshop discussions. They collectively suggested continuing awareness initiatives to ensure a better understanding of the role and operations of the CCRCCs.

As a follow-up to these discussions, facilitator training will be conducted to establish CCRCCs under the guidance of the Congolese Government. This initiative, backed by MONUSCO, forms part of the transition process and skills transfer to the International NGO VNGI, which will oversee the implementation of these crucial measures for peace and social cohesion.

Furthermore, the distribution of copies of Order 006 and laws related to decentralization, subdivision of territorial entities, and the status of customary leaders among the participants underscores the commitment to transparency and legality in these processes.

The active engagement of stakeholders during the workshop underscores the importance placed on peaceful conflict resolution and the promotion of effective local governance. Achieving a more harmonious and prosperous society undoubtedly requires mutual understanding and collaboration among all segments of the community.
