Insecurity in Rusamambu, North Kivu: Threats from the NDC/Rénové armed group disrupt education

**Fatshimetrie: Schools closed in Rusamambu, North Kivu, under threat from the armed group NDC/Rénové**

Several primary and secondary schools in Rusamambu, North Kivu, have been shut down for over a week due to threats from the NDC/Rénové armed group. The Ikobo and Rusamambu primary schools, along with the Rusamambu and Salama institutes, were forced to suspend their operations because of demands by the militia for an illegal monthly tax from teachers in the region. Those who refuse to pay face severe repercussions, including arrests and physical violence, creating a pervasive atmosphere of fear and insecurity among residents.

Local figure John Muhemeri has called on authorities to intervene swiftly and effectively in response to the crisis. He highlights the lack of collaboration between military forces in the area and the community, exacerbating the security situation. Muhemeri advocates for an increased military presence to safeguard the population and their belongings, identifying the absence of such protection as the root cause of the escalating insecurity.

Members of the NDC armed movement associated with Guidon have attempted to deflect these accusations by attributing the tensions to a supposed land dispute involving teachers and other community members. Nevertheless, numerous teachers have fled the region out of concern for their safety, leaving many children without access to education and protection.

This distressing scenario underscores the ongoing challenges faced by vulnerable populations in the DRC. Urgent action is required from relevant authorities to ensure the safety and welfare of local residents. Efforts must also be directed towards establishing mechanisms to combat exploitation and misconduct by armed groups, fostering a secure environment conducive to education and community development.
