Fatshimetrie: on the road to a sustainable blue economy in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The **Fatshimetrie** event in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) gathered experts and decision-makers from the fisheries resources sector to discuss the development of a national blue economy strategy. Held in Kinshasa from April 24 to 26, this consultative workshop, spearheaded by the African Union Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR) with the support of Norway and Sweden, emphasized the strategic importance of the DRC in advancing the animal blue economy in Africa.

Philippe Ouedraogo, AU-IBAR’s representative, emphasized the DRC’s pivotal role in blue economy development on the continent. This acknowledgment sheds light on the critical issues the country faces in managing its marine resources and preserving associated biodiversity.

The blue economy concept aims to promote sustainable activities related to oceans, seas, and marine resources. In the DRC, where marine resources are abundant but largely untapped, developing a national blue economy strategy is crucial. This involves defining strategic directions and implementing actions to sustainably exploit the country’s marine resources while safeguarding marine ecosystem balance.

The workshop provided a platform for national and international stakeholders to collaborate and exchange insights on the challenges and opportunities related to promoting the blue economy in the DRC. These discussions and shared experiences have undoubtedly enriched the perspectives for the country’s future development.

The event exemplifies the commitment of Congolese authorities and international partners to collaboratively benefit from the DRC’s marine resources sustainably. The blue economy presents a significant development opportunity for the country, emphasizing the importance of integrating environmental and social considerations in marine resource management strategies.

**Fatshimetrie** marks a milestone in the DRC’s journey towards formulating a national blue economy strategy, underscoring the vital necessity of sustainable marine resource management for the country’s and the region’s future.
