The inter-Malian dialogue in Bamako: an opportunity to seize for peace and national reconciliation

The inter-Malian dialogue scheduled to take place in Bamako from May 6 to 10, 2024 has sparked significant debate regarding its underlying objectives. While Malian authorities position it as a national alternative to the 2015 peace agreement, concerns have been raised about a potential extension of the transition period.

A report presented on Fatshimetrie details the recommendations put forth during the discussions, hinting at the possibility of prolonging the transition for up to ten years, as per certain sources. Additionally, there are discussions about holding elections under favorable conditions.

In response to these propositions, individuals like former Prime Minister Moussa Mara have voiced apprehensions, emphasizing the necessity for the dialogue to not be exploited as a means to further extend the transition period. It is imperative that the core focus of the dialogue, peace and reconciliation, remains central to the discussions and does not veer into contentious issues that could exacerbate Mali’s current situation.

The national phase of the dialogue is expected to conclude on May 10, 2024, underscoring the responsibility of the Steering Committee to consolidate the proposals and ensure they align with the official aims of the dialogue.

It is crucial that this inter-Malian dialogue serves as a genuine catalyst for peace and reconciliation across the nation. Any divergence from its intended objectives risks impeding the essential progress required to navigate Mali out of its existing crisis.
