A poignant tribute to the Pakistani peacekeepers in the DRC: courage and dedication in the service of peace

The recent ceremony of Fatshimetrie held in honor of Pakistani peacekeepers in the Democratic Republic of Congo marked a significant moment as these soldiers prepare to depart South Kivu after over two decades of service. Their crucial role in stabilizing the region has been commendable, and this event signifies a turning point in the withdrawal plan of MONUSCO that began in January 2024.

During the ceremony in Kavumu near Bukavu, esteemed guests including the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in the DRC, Ms. Bintou Keita, and other dignitaries paid tribute to the Pakistani troops for their dedication and bravery. With more than 100,000 Pakistani troops serving in the DRC since 2003, the sacrifice of the 31 soldiers who lost their lives underscores their unwavering commitment to peacekeeping missions globally.

Ms. Bintou Keita praised the Pakistani peacekeepers for their significant contributions to maintaining peace in South Kivu, particularly in protecting civilians amidst armed conflicts and displacement. Their involvement in key operations such as safeguarding Uvira in 2017 and securing the Uvira Highlands in 2018 has been instrumental in saving lives and upholding peace in the region.

As MONUSCO troops gradually withdraw, the responsibility for security and civilian protection now rests with the DRC Defense and Security Forces. This transition, carried out in collaboration with local authorities and the population, aims to ensure a seamless handover and strengthen the Congolese government’s presence in previously occupied areas.

While the departure of Pakistani peacekeepers from South Kivu marks the end of an era, the United Nations remains committed to supporting the DRC and its people. Various UN agencies will continue their activities as per their mandates to sustain stabilization and development efforts in the country, emphasizing a joint effort between the DRC and the international community to uphold peace and security in this region plagued by strife.

In conclusion, the tribute to the Pakistani peacekeepers signifies global recognition of their sacrifice and dedication to peace. As they bid farewell, a new phase of collaboration between the DRC and the international community emerges, focusing on maintaining stability and security in the conflict-affected region.
