Shocking case in Uganda: Young girl attacked during religious service

In eastern Uganda, a disturbing incident involving a Muslim family has shocked the nation. Seven family members were arrested for allegedly assaulting an 18-year-old girl who had attended a church service. The girl reportedly endured 100 cane lashes from her uncle while five others restrained her, as captured in a circulating video that sparked outrage.

Authorities have detained the family, including the girl’s guardian, pending further investigation for possible assault or torture charges. The police spokesperson, Samuel Semewo, mentioned the victim’s gradual recovery and awaiting medical evaluation.

A local Muslim representative strongly condemned the act as “barbaric and inhumane,” highlighting its contradiction with Islamic values. Despite ongoing investigations, the family has remained silent on the allegations.

This incident underscores critical issues of human rights, domestic violence, and religious minority protection in Uganda. Justice must prevail to ensure the safety and rights of all citizens, irrespective of their faith.
