In the territory of Fizi, South Kivu province, tensions and violence have shattered the apparent calm, leading to a disturbing rise in targeted assassinations and murders associated with accusations of witchcraft. Shockingly, over 60 such cases were reported between September 2023 and February 2024, instilling fear and dread among the local populace.
Jacques Alimasi, the president of the New Congolese Civil Society in Fizi, has raised the alarm over this wave of unacceptable violence. He points out that these killings, committed by armed and unidentified individuals, target innocent citizens based on unfounded accusations of witchcraft, resulting in the loss of innocent lives.
Similarly, Samy Badibanga Kalonji, the administrator of Fizi territory, acknowledges the presence of settling scores, unresolved conflicts, and various hidden motives fueling this cycle of violence. Urgent action is needed to break this deadly pattern, with Kalonji proposing the implementation of an awareness campaign to educate the population and discourage resorting to violence for irrational reasons.
Restoring trust and security in the Tanganyika community, where fear and uncertainty have taken root, is paramount. Collaboration between local authorities and civil organizations is essential to prevent further violence, safeguard vulnerable individuals, and ensure justice prevails for the victims of these brutal acts.
The invaluable assets of peace and stability must not be sacrificed to superstition and fear. It is imperative to halt this senseless wave of violence and strive to forge a safer and more just future for all residents of the Fizi region.
