New initiatives to strengthen communication in aviation in Nigeria

In a recent interview with Fatshimetrie newspaper, NAMA Director General Farouk Umar emphasized the critical necessity for enhancing the agency’s communication system in the aviation sector. With the continuous expansion of air routes leading to heightened demand, the efficiency of the industry’s air traffic control system is being put to the test.

Since the new management’s appointment, collaborative efforts between NAMA and the federal government have been directed towards investing more in the sector. Farouk Umar underscored the importance of improving signal coverage to accommodate the increasing number of air routes, ensuring effective communication across Nigeria.

Among the challenges identified by Farouk Umar is the issue of inadequate power supply, essential for the optimal functioning of equipment. To address this, he declared an emergency regarding power supply and explored alternative solutions. In alignment with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, NAMA has implemented three primary power sources: the national grid, electrical generators, and solar power.

Moreover, Farouk Umar disclosed that the Presidency has allocated a budget of 40 billion naira, to be managed under the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, aiming to intervene in the aviation sector. Although the mobilization of these funds is pending, they signify a beacon of hope for fortifying aeronautical infrastructure to meet industry demands.

This strategic approach mirrors a strong commitment to optimizing Nigeria’s aviation sector by prioritizing enhanced communication, reliable energy solutions, and strategic investments. NAMA’s dedication to modernizing its infrastructure and meeting global standards represents a significant stride towards solidifying Nigeria’s aviation industry on the global platform.
