Citizen mobilization in Kinshasa: For a responsible vote of provincial deputies

The upcoming election of the governor and vice-governors in the city-province of Kinshasa is a pivotal moment for the future of this Congolese metropolis. Ahead of this crucial election, citizen movements and civil society organizations have united to engage provincial deputies, who hold the responsibility of voting in this significant event.

Led by the citizens’ assembly, these groups have initiated the “Lobela deputy” campaign. The primary aim of this campaign is to remind provincial deputies about the importance of exercising their vote responsibly, with a focus on the well-being of Kinshasa’s population. Local elected officials must prioritize the needs and expectations of the citizens in their decision-making process.

Christian Mukeni Nsambay, an active member of the citizens’ assembly, stresses the vital role of provincial deputies in governing Kinshasa. He emphasizes that the elected governor should prioritize the interests of the city’s residents, who seek quality services and transparent accountability. The “Lobela deputy” campaign seeks to foster a culture of responsibility and accountability among local elected representatives.

The citizens’ assembly of Kinshasa recently convened its inaugural plenary meeting, centering on the theme, “Elections and development, what prospects for Kinshasa?”. This gathering served to highlight the issues surrounding the upcoming election and promote constructive dialogues regarding the future of the Congolese capital.

In essence, the “Lobela deputy” campaign embodies a commendable approach aimed at raising awareness among local decision-makers regarding the significance of their vote for Kinshasa’s development. It underlines the commitment of citizens to actively engage in the city’s political landscape, advocating for transparent governance that prioritizes the well-being of the population.
