A new vision for the mining industry in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The recent conference organized by the Mining Cadastre brought to light the intrinsic challenges and promising future of the mining sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). With the theme “The mining sector of the Democratic Republic of Congo: challenges and perspectives,” Mr. Popol MABOLIA YENGA, the Director General of CAMI, delivered an enlightening speech to aspiring law students from the Protestant University of Congo.

During his impassioned address, Mr. MABOLIA emphasized the significance of empowering the youth with knowledge about the mining industry. He urged students to be catalysts for change by reclaiming control of industrial mining, emphasizing the importance of ensuring that the nation’s wealth primarily benefits its citizens.

A key concern addressed at the conference was the issue of child labor in mines, a distressing consequence of poverty. Tackling this unacceptable reality demands a comprehensive approach encompassing economic policies, education, and raising awareness. Notable speakers like Mr. Jivet NDELA KUBOKOSO, a Professor of Mining Law, and Mr. Cyrille MUTOMBO, the Vice-President of the Chamber of Mines of the FEC, provided valuable insights on this matter.

The ensuing debate underscored the shortcomings of the 2018 Mining Code in combating poverty within local communities. The speakers stressed the necessity of better training Congolese individuals in the mining sector to fully leverage the provisions of the new code. Undoubtedly, education and awareness are pivotal in fostering a sustainable and equitable mining industry.

In conclusion, the conference served as a wellspring of inspiration for budding law students while emphasizing the imperative for increased Congolese participation in managing their mining resources. By regaining control of industrial mining, the DRC can ensure a prosperous and enduring future. Promoting awareness, education, and collective commitment are paramount in shaping a mining sector that upholds human rights and engenders development for all Congolese citizens.
