The issues at stake in the conflict between the Lagos government and the Landmark Group in question

Recent news in the Lagos region of Nigeria has brought to light a conflict of interest between the state government and the Landmark Group, a prominent tourism sector company. The Lagos State Government issued a demolition notice against the Landmark Group on March 19, 2024, citing that sections of the company were obstructing the planned route of a 700-kilometer coastal road.

The move has sparked significant concerns among the owners and employees of over 80 businesses operating at the Landmark site on Victoria Island, where more than 4,000 direct jobs are created. To safeguard these businesses and jobs, the Landmark Group has appealed to the federal government to reconsider the route of the proposed road by diverting it around approximately 1.5 kilometers of the current site.

Despite ongoing discussions between the federal government and the company’s management, no agreement has been reached to ensure that the construction of the road will not disrupt the activities of the companies located on the beach.

Expressing their concerns, the Landmark Group highlighted the sudden advancement of sand filling works, which poses a risk of further disruption to their tourism hub. They have suggested to the government to reconsider the original route of the road towards the Water Corporation Road median, which is currently unused without any permanent structures.

Moreover, the Landmark Group criticized the lack of formal consultation regarding the alignment of the coastal highway and the potential environmental impact of the project on the Landmark site. The acceleration of landfilling on the coastline has caused apprehension among independent businesses, suppliers, employees, and customers within the Landmark ecosystem.

As discussions continue between the company and government authorities, the Landmark Group anticipates an official notification soon regarding the resolution of this dispute to reassure the local community and alleviate uncertainties about the future of their businesses.

This situation raises pertinent questions about striking a balance between infrastructure development and preserving local jobs and businesses. It is imperative for authorities and businesses to collaborate and find mutually beneficial solutions that promote economic development while respecting the environment and affected communities.
