The Democratic Republic of Congo recently played a significant role in the ten-year review of the Addis Ababa Declaration on Population and Development (AADPD + 10) in Lusaka, Zambia, showcasing its commitment to progress. The review, following the 2013 Regional Conference on Population and Development, aimed at evaluating the implementation of the Program of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) from 1994 in Cairo.

During a constructive feedback session at UNDP headquarters in Kinshasa on April 9, 2024, the outcomes of this review were shared among stakeholders such as the Congolese government, civil society, and partners. The discussions focused on assessing advancements, identifying ongoing challenges, and exploring opportunities to enhance human rights, education, and sexual and reproductive health across the nation.

Key recommendations emerged from these deliberations, emphasizing the necessity of supporting girls’ education, aiding vulnerable women in development initiatives, bolstering the statistical system, conducting a nationwide census to inform policymaking, and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations on all fronts. Additionally, there was a call to engage young people in implementing the Addis Ababa Declaration and integrate comprehensive sexuality education into planning initiatives.

The Ministry of Planning representative stressed the imperative of harmonious collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure the country’s cohesive development. The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) commended the DRC’s efforts in preparing its evaluation report, highlighting the significance of international cooperation in advancing national endeavors for the betterment of the Congolese population.

The Democratic Republic of Congo emerges as a pivotal advocate for the rights and well-being of its citizens, with the ten-year review serving as a platform for reflection and action to fortify policies and programs supporting the country’s inclusive and sustainable growth.

The vivid images and varied dialogues from this gathering portray the dedication and engagement of diverse stakeholders, solidifying their shared commitment to advancing the goals of the Addis Ababa Declaration on population and development in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
