Tensions flared up once again in the Rutshuru region of North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Thursday morning, as clashes erupted between Wazalendo militiamen and M23 rebels. The clashes focused on the Bwito chiefdom, where the Wazalendo launched an assault to drive out the M23 fighters from the areas of Kibirizi, Kabanda, and Kasoko.

Local sources reported that the Wazalendo initiated the attack by targeting an M23 camp in Kabanda, setting fire to the installations before advancing into Kibirizi. Despite their brief advancement, they later retreated, indicating the ongoing volatility in the region.

Isaac Kibira, a prominent figure from the Bwito chiefdom, provided insight into the progression of the clashes, detailing exchanges of gunfire and explosions in Kibirizi. He emphasized that while the Wazalendo forces withdrew, gunshots continued to echo in the area, suggesting that the M23 rebels were engaged in a search operation.

Human rights defenders expressed concerns for the safety of civilians in the region, urging the conflicting parties to abide by international humanitarian laws. They stressed the importance of distinguishing Wazalendo fighters from the civilian population and highlighted the paramount need to prioritize the protection of innocent civilians during times of conflict.

Additionally, an incident involving a bomb explosion in Kasoko stirred apprehension among residents, despite minimal material damage. This event underscored the persistent instability in the region, emphasizing the urgent requirement for interventions to safeguard vulnerable communities.

While clashes intensified in the Bwito chiefdom, relative calm prevailed on other fronts, notably in Masisi, where recent intense fighting had been reported. Nonetheless, the precarious situation was exemplified by incidents in Mubambiro, resulting in casualties among both civilians and security personnel in the region.

In light of these renewed tensions, all involved parties must uphold international humanitarian laws and prioritize the protection of innocent civilians embroiled in the conflict. It is imperative to seek peaceful resolutions to quell violence and foster stability in North Kivu, ensuring the well-being of all inhabitants.
