New Osun State Logo: Symbol of Renaissance or Controversy?

Osun State recently unveiled its new logo following the announcement made on Wednesday, April 17 via official government social media. This logo redesign stems from a bill passed by the Osun State House of Assembly.

The announcement’s official statement reads in part: “I am delighted to sign this new logo into law as a signal of the rebirth of our beloved state. The new logo is significant as it meaningfully reflects our anthem history, our values and our tradition.”

This new logo is considered an educational tool for future generations since it contains symbols of our monuments, strengths, resources, and history. It is also seen as a means of promoting the State nationally and internationally. The governor described the new logo as a representative symbol of the state, thereby promising a prosperous, abundant, and sustainable future for the people and admirers of Osun State.

Reacting to the freshly unveiled logo, the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, described it as “meaningful and reflective of our community, traditions, and possibilities.”

However, netizens expressed mixed opinions, with some finding the logo redesign to be a misplaced priority in the face of mounting economic woes, while others praised the governor for the initiative.

Abu Ahyan Opeyemi wrote: “Our governor remains the most creative in the West. Those who are not satisfied can design their logo and associate it with their family’s land documents. As for this logo, no other state does not have a more suitable logo. This logo reflects the creative sense of the people of Osun.”

Theo Abu commented: “What kind of logo is that, Osun?”

For his part, Onifade Dolapo questioned: “Do we really need this? I hope they didn’t pay for this project.”

A state’s logo is often a symbol of its identity and vision. It is therefore normal that its overhaul provokes various reactions within the population. However, the actual impact of this new image on the perception of Osun State remains to be seen in the coming months.
