Urgent call for peace in Ituri: a cry from the heart from the Deputy Minister of National Defense

The Deputy Minister of National Defense and Veterans, Samy Adubango, recently issued a compelling statement regarding the ongoing presence of armed groups in Ituri. In a poignant address dated April 15, he passionately appealed to these militias, urging them to cease their attacks on innocent civilians in the region.

Adubango emphasized in no uncertain terms that the true adversary of the Democratic Republic of Congo is the M23, backed by the Rwandan army, and not the local communities who bear the brunt of militia violence. He called upon Ituri militants to choose the path of peace, cautioning them about the repercussions of persisting in armed activities.

“The time has come for all armed group members operating in Ituri province to take accountability for their actions,” the deputy minister insisted.

Additionally, Adubango made a specific plea to young individuals involved in acts of violence against the State. He encouraged them to utilize the upcoming visit of Jean-Pierre Bemba, Deputy Prime Minister of National Defense and Veterans to Bunia, as an opportunity to collectively find solutions for lasting peace in Ituri. He expressed hope for their collaboration to construct a more peaceful and secure future for the region.

The statement by Samy Adubango serves as a sincere and urgent call for peace and reconciliation in Ituri, a region scarred by prolonged conflict. It underscores the critical necessity for all stakeholders to renounce violence and unequivocally commit to the path of peace for the well-being and stability of the Iturian population.
