Two months after the launch of the urban road modernization project in Beni, progress has come to a halt, prompting concerns among local residents. Initiated on February 9 and funded by the provincial government, this project aimed to revamp and enhance the city’s road infrastructure. The initial excitement and visible advancements, particularly on “Jumlanii” Avenue in the Malepe district where informal structures were cleared to make way for renovation, have now been met with stagnation, leaving the community in uncertainty.
Residents of Malepe express disappointment over the sudden pause in construction activities, with one resident stating, “We were thrilled to see the work commence, but the sudden stop has left us puzzled, especially when they were compacting the soil.”
According to a motorcycle taxi driver, the work suspension was due to a breakdown of the compactor machine: “The machine stopped working when they reached the Catholic church here in Malepe, and since then, no progress has been made.” Official explanations from the company Vihumbira SSV, responsible for the project, have been vague, stating that they are continuing with the work without providing further details.
The modernization project, costing a total of 9 million US dollars, encompasses the asphalting of five kilometers of roads in Beni. Apart from “Jumlanii” Avenue, other key routes leading to the women’s prison and the Mavivi civil airport are also slated for renovation.
The suspension of work not only impacts the aesthetic appeal of the area but also affects road traffic and the local economy. Residents and traders eagerly await the resumption of work to benefit from enhanced infrastructure and improved living conditions. It is hoped that the authorities will swiftly address the technical issues to ensure the prompt continuation of the project, unlocking the anticipated benefits of urban road modernization in Beni.
