Nigeria is grappling with a concerning economic situation, with recent data from the country’s statistical agency indicating a distressing trend. The inflation rate surged by 1.50% in March, hitting 33.20%, a level not witnessed in 28 years. This rise is primarily driven by escalating food and energy prices, directly impacting the purchasing power of households.
A persistent increase in consumer inflation over the past 15 months has significantly affected citizens’ incomes and eroded their savings. In February, the inflation rate stood at 31.70%, underscoring a continual upward trajectory.
Food inflation, in particular, soared to 40.01% in March 2024, up from 37.92% in February. This spike can be attributed, in part, to the removal of the fuel subsidy by President Bola Tinubu last June. The move resulted in a substantial uptick in the prices of essential commodities, exacerbating financial hardships for millions of Nigerians.
Furthermore, Nigeria devalued its currency, the Naira, twice in less than a year to combat persistent foreign exchange shortages, causing the dollar to appreciate against the Naira.
In efforts to curb inflation, the Central Bank of Nigeria has raised interest rates twice this year, with expectations of a price decline from May onwards.
Addressing Nigeria’s economic challenges necessitates coordinated action and prudent measures to alleviate the impact of inflation on the population. It is crucial for authorities to make informed decisions to stabilize the economy and ensure a decent standard of living for all citizens.
