National Dialogue on State Policing in Nigeria: A Step Towards Enhanced Security

The pivotal concept of National Dialogue on State Policing in Nigeria marks a significant stride towards addressing the nation’s security challenges. Organized by the House of Representatives in collaboration with the Policy and Legal Advocacy Center (PLAC), FCDO/UKAID, and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), this initiative aims to foster inclusive discussions on the advantages and hindrances of state police, with a strong focus on incorporating citizens’ perspectives.

Spokesperson for the House, Akintunde Rotimi, highlighted that the objective of this dialogue is to devise models and establish institutional and legal frameworks to enhance the implementation of state policing in Nigeria. This national conversation aligns with the President’s efforts to revamp and fortify the country’s security architecture for optimal functionality.

Emphasizing the urgency of the national dialogue, House Speaker Abbas Tajudeen underscored that the prevailing insecurity in Nigeria necessitates swift action and collective accountability. The forthcoming discourse on national security and the introduction of state police presents a crucial opportunity for unified participation, substantive deliberations, and the development of practical strategies.

The event is expected to feature the Senate President, Godwill Akpabio, and will take place at the Continental Hotel in Abuja (formerly Sheraton Hotel & Tower). Former President Goodluck Jonathan and former Head of State Abdulsalami Abubakar are slated to moderate various segments of the dialogue.

Beyond being a mere gathering, this national dialogue on state police in Nigeria embodies the aspiration for tangible solutions tailored to contemporary security dilemmas. It underscores the significance of citizen engagement, political involvement, and international collaboration in constructing a safer nation where each individual’s voice contributes to forging a peaceful and prosperous future.
