The recent series of heavy-handed operations conducted by the National Drug and Substance Abuse Agency (NDLEA) in Nigeria has led to the arrest of several drug traffickers and the seizure of significant quantities of narcotics and counterfeit bank notes totaling 3.2 million naira.
In a statement by NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the operations resulted in the apprehension of individuals involved in drug trafficking and distribution across various states in Nigeria. Notable arrests include Aliyu Lawal in Lokoja, Kogi State, found with 620 blocks of cannabis weighing 310 kg, and Jama Obodo intercepted along the Okene-Lokoja-Abuja expressway with 10 bags of cannabis weighing 98kg.
Further arrests were made in Calabar, Cross River State, where a 40-year-old widow named Theodora Ita was apprehended for producing and selling a dangerous psychoactive substance known as “Combine.” Additionally, Godwin Samuel was caught with 39.4 kg of cannabis sativa in Calabar.
Traffickers in Kano and Imo states were also arrested with substantial amounts of narcotics. Sani Mohammed and Christopher Eze were captured with 900,000 opioid pills in Kano, while a logistics truck carrying 230 blocks of cannabis sativa was intercepted in Imo State.
In its commitment to combat substance abuse, the NDLEA has launched awareness campaigns nationwide, educating students, military personnel, and local communities about the dangers of illicit drug use and promoting healthy lifestyles free from substance abuse.
