The escalation of violence in the Bagata territory: Urgency for concrete actions to restore peace

The territory of Bagata in the province of Kwilu is currently in a state of crisis due to the escalating activities of the Mobondo militia. Recent clashes have led to the tragic deaths of eight individuals and the displacement of numerous civilians, particularly women and children. Villages such as Mubenga, Matele, Mbulukwo, Mbaka, Dwama farm, Mwamba farm, and Kingala Kiana have been severely impacted by this violence.

The Mobondo militia, originating from border villages in Kwango, including Fangulu, Kimbe, Baringa-Zumu, Baringa-Kasi, and Bitadi, has further heightened tensions in the region. Despite recent peace initiatives such as the commitment act signed by traditional chiefs Teke and Yaka in the presence of the Head of State, atrocities continue, especially in the neighboring territory of Kwamouth.

In response to the escalating violence, Garry Sakata, the elected national deputy for Bagata, emphasizes the necessity of pursuing legal action to hold the perpetrators of these crimes accountable. According to Sakata, genuine reconciliation and the establishment of lasting peace require the prosecution of those responsible for the violence and the provision of state support to help affected populations rebuild their lives and communities.

Sakata asserts that solutions cannot solely be devised in the capital city of Kinshasa but must be implemented locally, where conflicts occur. He highlights that only impartial state justice can ensure the safety of victims and prevent future outbreaks of violence.

Meanwhile, in Kwamouth, located in the province of Maï-Ndombe, violence persists, underscoring the urgent need for measures to protect vulnerable populations and prevent further tragedies. The recent incidents, including the killing of five individuals and the kidnapping of one individual on the same day as the commitment act signing, serve as stark reminders of the precarious security situation in the region.

It is crucial for authorities to take decisive actions to restore peace and stability in the regions affected by intercommunal violence. Upholding justice, engaging in inclusive dialogue, and providing support to affected communities must be central to the efforts aimed at averting new conflicts and fostering a peaceful future for all residents of Kwilu province.
