Release of hostages and clashes in Ituri: the battle for security continues

In the province of Ituri, tragedy struck the locality of Ndalya, about 100 kilometers southwest of Bunia, on Saturday, April 13. Clashes between the Armed Forces of the Democratic Republic of Congo (FARDC) and the rebel group ADF resulted in the loss of seven lives, including a member of the armed organization.

The violent incidents led to the release of several hostages held by the attackers, as reported by the army spokesperson in Ituri. The intervention by loyalist forces saved lives and alleviated the suffering of those held captive.

While the military’s involvement in freeing the hostages is commendable, it underscores the pressing security situation in the region. The recurrent abuses by ADF rebels against civilians highlight a distressing and unacceptable reality.

The Convention for the Respect of Human Rights (CRDH) has urged the army to take decisive and sustained action to quash these armed groups and safeguard the civilian population. The paramount importance of combating insecurity and violence cannot be overstated to ensure the stability and safety of Ituri’s residents.

National and international authorities must remain vigilant and actively contribute to resolving this crisis by offering substantial support to law enforcement and bolstering conflict prevention mechanisms. The people of Ituri deserve to live in tranquility and security, and it is incumbent upon all of us to work towards achieving this objective.
