The humanitarian crisis in North Kivu: an urgent call for international solidarity

The humanitarian crisis in North Kivu, specifically in the Rutshuru territory, has reached a critical level, demanding immediate attention and support for the displaced population. Following the M23 war, around 168,000 individuals have been forced to flee to the south of the Lubero territory, where they are facing dire conditions.

Numerous humanitarian organizations report that these displaced individuals are mainly located in various areas such as Kanyabayonga, Kaseghe, Mighobwe, Luofu, Miriki, and Mbughavinywa. With an additional 100,000 already displaced persons in the region, the humanitarian situation has escalated to alarming levels.

Reports highlight severe shortages in essentials like shelter, food, clean water, sanitation, and medical supplies. Especially vulnerable groups like children, pregnant women, and nursing mothers are facing a nutritional crisis, with many suffering from acute malnutrition.

The onset of the rainy season poses additional challenges, increasing the risk of diseases like diarrhea and malaria, particularly threatening young children. Poor sanitation conditions and limited access to healthcare further exacerbate the situation, necessitating urgent assistance to prevent a major humanitarian catastrophe in the conflict-affected region.

Humanitarian agencies, including the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), are urgently appealing for international support to address the critical needs of the displaced population. Immediate intervention is required, including provisions for shelter, food, clean water, sanitation, and healthcare services.

During this time of crisis, it is crucial for solidarity and commitment to prevail in assisting the displaced individuals of Rutshuru territory to restore hope and dignity for a better future. The collective and swift action of the international community is imperative to avert a deepening humanitarian emergency and save thousands of lives.
