The transition to a new era: tribute to the Chinese contingent of MONUSCO in Bukavu

The ceremony honoring the Chinese engineering contingent of MONUSCO in Bukavu marked a significant turning point in the history of the international presence in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). After 20 years of exceptional contribution to the stability and development of South Kivu, Chinese peacekeepers are preparing to leave the region, thus symbolizing the process of gradual disengagement of the UN Mission in the country.

Since 2003, the Chinese contingent has played a crucial role in consolidating the province’s infrastructure, through the completion of numerous engineering projects. Their expertise enabled the repair of 1,800 kilometers of roads, the rehabilitation of more than 80 bridges and the construction of 20 heliports, thus facilitating the implementation of MONUSCO’s mandate in the region.

During the tribute ceremony, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in the DRC, Ms. Bintou Keita, expressed her deep gratitude to the People’s Republic of China for the commitment and professionalism of the peacekeepers deployed in the South. Kivu. Their know-how and discipline made it possible to overcome numerous challenges, contributing significantly to peace and security in the DRC.

The departure of the Chinese contingent does not, however, mark the end of the United Nations’ involvement in the DRC. Rather, it is a reconfiguration of their presence, with continued support for the Congolese people and their government. United Nations agencies, funds and programs will continue their mission in accordance with their mandates, while the Congolese government will assume greater responsibility for the protection and security of civilians.

This gradual disengagement of MONUSCO is part of a desire for transition towards greater autonomy and responsibility of the Congolese authorities in matters of security and development. The Kamanyola base, transferred to the Congolese authorities last February, testifies to this transition towards increased sovereignty and strengthened cooperation between the international community and the Congolese government.

In conclusion, the tribute paid to the Chinese engineering contingent of MONUSCO in Bukavu marks the end of an era marked by their exemplary contribution to the stability and development of South Kivu. This transition towards greater Congolese responsibility and renewed cooperation illustrates the common desire to guarantee lasting peace and security in the DRC, in a context of positive transformation and evolution towards reinforced sovereignty.
