“The mining sector in DR Congo: engine of economic growth and lever of sustainable development”

The dynamism of the mining sector in the Democratic Republic of Congo remains an essential driver of the country’s economic growth, as highlighted in the recent economic report from the Central Bank of Congo (BCC). According to forecasts from this institution, the growth rate for the year 2024 is estimated at 5.7%, reflecting a positive trend in the mining sector.

Growth in real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to reach 7.5% in 2023, reflecting sustained progress in this vital sector of the Congolese economy. This development is largely attributable to the dynamism observed in the mining sector, favored by the good performance of the prices of the main raw materials exported by the country.

Furthermore, the added value of the extractive branch is expected to increase, showing significant growth of 7.8% for the current year. This renewed growth is also supported by the implementation of the Mining Sector Development Plan, as well as by the performance of manufacturing industries and the trade sector.

At the same time, non-mining GDP growth is expected to reach 4.5% in 2024, highlighting a diversification of the Congolese economy. This growth is fueled by the implementation of development projects in other sectors, thus contributing to overall and balanced growth of the country’s economy.

Economic growth, measured through the increase in the production of goods and services, remains a major challenge for the Democratic Republic of Congo. Thanks to efficient management of mineral resources and the diversification of economic sectors, the country is able to consolidate its growth and create opportunities for sustainable development.

In conclusion, the mining sector remains an essential pillar of the Congolese economy, contributing significantly to the country’s overall growth. However, it is crucial to continue efforts in economic diversification and the development of other sectors to ensure sustainable and inclusive growth for the entire Congolese population.
