The rural commune of Kasongo, located in Maniema, is currently shaken by a wave of alarming insecurity, as evidenced by the recent denunciation of the region’s Civil Society. Indeed, residents have witnessed a worrying increase in acts of armed robbery, causing significant losses and sowing terror among the population.
In the past five months, ten cases of armed robbery have been recorded, leaving residents in a climate of fear and uncertainty. The latest incident, which occurred on the night of March 13 to 14, saw Madame Safi, an economic operator, become the victim of a theft which resulted in financial losses as well as injuries to her family.
Despite the population’s appeals to the competent authorities, no effective intervention has been undertaken to curb this increase in insecurity. Economic operators, who regularly suffer these attacks, are forced to temporarily close their businesses, thus impacting the local economy.
Faced with this worrying situation, the president of the Civil Society of Kasongo, Jean Amuri Kitoko, expressed his concerns about the effectiveness of the security forces in place. Despite the measures taken, insecurity persists, leaving the population in a climate of vulnerability.
The urgent request from the Civil Society of Kasongo is clear: the authorities must act quickly and effectively to put an end to this dangerous situation and ensure the safety of the inhabitants of the commune. It is imperative that concrete and lasting measures are put in place to guarantee the tranquility and protection of all.
This situation highlights the crucial importance of close cooperation between local authorities, security forces and civil society to preserve peace and security in the Kasongo region, Maniema.
